Tutoring

At the Bowie Reading & Learning Center, we specialize in working with students experiencing difficulties in school, in the acquisition of basic literacy and math skills and in developing effective learning strategies. Programs include comprehensive reading and writing instruction, readiness training for pre-school age children and study skills instruction for students grades 4 and above. Additional programs in the specific content areas of science, math, English, history, and foreign language are also available.

For most students receiving tutoring services, an initial assessment is necessary to determine student status and need. Assessments conducted outside of the Center are accepted, but may need to be supplemented with brief assessments conducted during initial tutoring sessions, at no extra charge.

All tutoring is conducted one-on-one. Each student is assigned a tutor carefully selected by the Center Director. A primary focus is on developing a successful, long-term relationship between the student and his/her tutor. Tutoring may take place at the Center, at the student’s school, at a conveniently located public library, or in the student’s home. When possible, initial tutoring sessions are held at the Center for the purpose of monitoring the developing relationship between the student and tutor, as well as for fine-tuning the student’s instructional program.

All tutors are trained in the appropriate methods and specific programs prescribed for the student. The Center's Director provides support for the tutors and oversees the tutoring. Background information on tutors is made available to parents prior to the tutor being assigned, and initial placement is conditioned upon parent approval. If for some reason a parent is not happy with the assignment, attempts are made to provide another tutor for the student.

Student progress is monitored daily, weekly, and quarterly. After each tutoring session, tutors complete a report of the session activities and informal observations about the student’s progress in the session. These are reviewed by the Director. After each session, parents receive an emailed report summarizing the instruction for that period and evaluating the student’s progress in the program. These reports are also sent to the student's teachers if the parents chose this option.

Throughout each child's program, the Center works closely with parents and the child's school to monitor progress, keeping parents up-to-date with parent and teacher conferences, written reports detailing progress and recommended intervention plans. This extensive monitoring ensures that students achieve their maximum success within the program.
