About Us

The Bowie Reading and Learning Center began in Nashville almost a decade ago. Its founder, Dr. Bobby Bowie, wanted to have a center that would specifically address the issues of reading that were holding many students back. It was wonderfully received and very well respected in the Nashville community.

After Bobby’s unexpected death in 2003, our family decided to keep his legacy and vision going. In spring of 2006, we opened a second center here in Memphis, our hometown. It truly is a family business. We are all involved in one way or another because it makes us happy to keep Bobby’s dream alive.

We have taken Bobby’s basic goals and have branched out to include helping students in all aspects of education, not just reading. Our center serves students who need help with reading and math differences, organizing their lessons, getting ahead and helping prepare for exams in all subject areas. We work with students who may struggle with certain subject areas or who just want to have a higher grade. Many of our students do not struggle in school, but come to Bowie for that extra academic push they want or need.

In addition to tutoring, we have a wonderful ACT workshop that hosts no more than six students in a class so they receive personal attention. We also tutor for the GED, SAT, GRE, and the Praxis. Each student is assigned to a tutor and has the same tutor each time he comes so that a relationship is built between the two. Our tutors are all degreed and many have advanced degrees. They are so wonderful to work with!

For our specialty programs in reading and math, the tutors are especially trained for these specific programs. All tutoring is supervised and summaries are written and emailed after each session. It is our joy to be a support system to both the student and their school. Communication is the key to that support. It has been amazing to see how the teachers will go the extra mile to help us help their students. We have had great support from administrations as well.

In 2007, we became SACS/CASI (soon to be AdvancED) accredited and are extremely proud to be part of this organization. SACS holds all of its members accountable to excellence in education and we are proud to be part of such a mission.

We shed a lot of happy tears as we work with the kids each day. The center is an extremely happy environment, and we truly care about each one of our students. When they reach their goals we celebrate throughout the center!
